Tianxia Travels was founded in 2026 to invite travelers to some of the least-traveled yet most fascinating parts of China, from vast landscapes and historic cities to regions where ancient traditions remain part of daily life.

Our name, Tianxia (pronounced “tyen-shyah”), is an ancient Chinese concept meaning “all under heaven.” For thousands of years, the idea of tianxia has been used to describe the shared human world, a vision in which different peoples and cultures exist within a broader, interconnected civilization.

Together with our sister company Taedong Tours, our names Tianxia (天下) and Taedong (大同, read “datong” in Chinese) form the phrase tianxia datong (天下大同), which essentially means “a world in great unity.” This ideal reflects our belief that travel as a form of cultural exchange serves as a bridge between cultures, helping people better understand one another through firsthand experience.

China is one of the easiest countries in the world to explore independently in its major cities. Places such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou are modern, well connected, and welcoming to international visitors. At the same time, some of the country’s most culturally rich and visually stunning regions remain difficult to navigate without local knowledge and careful planning.

Many of these places are also among the most misunderstood. Regions such as Xinjiang and Tibet offer extraordinary history, culture, and landscapes, yet they are still rarely visited by international travelers and can be challenging to navigate independently, particularly where English-language services remain limited. Tianxia Travels was founded to make these journeys easier and more accessible for curious travelers who want to experience a broader side of China.

Our team brings together Chinese and international members with a strong understanding of both Chinese and Western cultures, helping bridge cultural, linguistic, and practical gaps so travelers can experience China in an authentic way without getting lost in translation.
