Southern Xinjiang Expedition: Kashgar & the Pamir Plateau — Summer 2026
Silk Road overland expedition from Kashgar to the Pamir Plateau, exploring China’s western frontier.
Tour Overview
6 Day Journey through China’s Western Frontier
Explore the ancient Silk Road city of Kashgar (Kashi) and the dramatic landscapes of the Pamir Plateau on this structured overland expedition through one of China’s most remote and geographically extreme regions. Following a single continuous frontier route, the journey travels from Kashgar deep into Taxkorgan and the high-altitude Pamir region before returning.
Rather than a series of isolated sightseeing stops, this itinerary is designed as a continuous managed expedition across a restricted borderland region, with curated cultural and natural highlights experienced along a single overland route. Due to the long distances, limited infrastructure, and high-altitude terrain involved, all travel is conducted in private expedition vehicles with reclining, single-sofa-style seating, ensuring stability and comfort throughout extended driving segments. Carefully selected hotels are used as rest bases between travel days.
The standard tour price is based on twin-share accommodation in standard double or twin rooms. Solo travelers will be paired with another traveler of the same sex. Friends traveling together may request to be roomed together at the time of booking. Couples should indicate during booking if they require a shared double bed configuration (one double bed instead of twin beds), which will be arranged accordingly.
For travelers who prefer not to share a room, single occupancy is available via a single supplement (standard or premium tier). Couples who wish to upgrade from a standard double room to a premium double room may also request this during booking.
Although the itinerary is not physically demanding in terms of hiking or strenuous activity, travelers should be aware that the journey reaches sustained high-altitude environments, which may cause altitude-related symptoms in some individuals. These effects are typically mild and temporary, and usually resolve after a period of acclimatization. However, in rare or more severe cases, medical attention may be required.
For this reason, travel insurance covering medical treatment and emergency evacuation is included in the tour price, providing additional protection throughout the expedition.

Afternoon

- After settling in, we will hold our pre-tour meeting and welcome ceremony at 3:00PM, where you will meet your Tianxia tour leader and fellow travelers.
- At 4:00PM we will head to the local NIA Service Center to obtain the special border area permit required to travel to Taxkorgan and the Pamir Plateau.
- Dinner tonight will be at a traditional Uygur restaurant, accompanied by live music and dance, offering your first taste of the rich cultural traditions of Xinjiang.
- Then we will take a guided evening walk through Kashgar Ancient City, led by a local resident who will introduce us to the history and daily life of one of Central Asia’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Afterwards you’ll have free time to wander the winding alleyways, browse local shops, try out street food, or relax in a traditional teahouse.
- Those who are interested can also take part in a traditional Uygur outfit photoshoot, dressing in traditional clothing for photos in the historic streets.
- For those who still have energy to spare, the night can continue with an optional exploration of Kashgar’s small but lively bar and hookah scene with your Tianxia guide and fellow travelers.
- Overnight in Kashgar.
Sunday, July 12 – Kashgar: The Living Silk Road
Morning
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Today we begin by visiting the Livestock Bazaar where livestock, food, and daily necessities are sold. It’s a fascinating glimpse into a centuries-old trading culture that still thrives today.
- Lunch will be enjoyed at the bazaar, where you’ll have the chance to try a variety of local Uygur street foods.
Afternoon
- After lunch, will explore some of Kashgar’s traditional crafts, including a visit to a handmade pottery workshop where artisans continue techniques passed down for generations.
- Then a local Uygur family will welcome us to their home for afternoon tea, offering a rare opportunity to see how people live inside the ancient city.
- Next we will visit the Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in Xinjiang and one of the most prominent examples of traditional Uygur architecture and cultural heritage.
- Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
- In the evening we attend the immersive performance “Rendezvous in Kashi,” where musicians and performers introduce the history of the Twelve Muqam, often considered the “mother of Uygur music.”
- Overnight in Kashgar.
Monday, July 13 – The Pamir Ascent
Morning
- Breakfast at the hotel before we begin one of the most scenic drives in all of Central Asia, heading south along the Pamir Highway toward Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County.
- Along the way we will pass through border area security checkpoints, where officers welcome travelers with tea as we continue our journey deeper into the mountains.
- Our first stop will be Baisha Lake, one of the most surreal landscapes of the Pamir Plateau. The lake’s unusual milky-blue color comes from minerals dissolved in the water, while the massive White Sand Mountains stretch for over 12 kilometers along its northern shore. Wind constantly reshapes the dunes into elegant wave-like patterns.
- This lake changes color throughout the year, appearing mint green in spring, Tiffany blue in summer, and emerald in autumn. In the middle of the lake stands a rusting metal platform, the remains of a Soviet scientific station, creating a striking contrast against the pristine alpine scenery.
- Here you will also have the chance to ride camels along the lakeshore.
- Lunch will be served in a traditional yurt beside the lake.
Afternoon
- We continue onward to Karakul Lake, located at the foot of Muztagh Ata, known locally as the “Father of Ice Mountains”. The lake’s surface reflects the surrounding snow peaks, grasslands, and sky, creating one of the most breathtaking views in western China.
- Next we stop at Muztagh Ata Glacier No. 5, where we can observe the immense glacier descending from the mountain.
- By evening we arrive in Taxkorgan, a high-altitude town near the borders of Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
- After checking in and a short rest, we’ll enjoy hot pot dinner in town.
- Overnight in Taxkorgan.
Tuesday, July 14 – The Taxkorgan Frontier
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Today we explore some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Pamir Plateau.
- Our first destination is the Wakhan Corridor viewpoint, one of the most remote frontier regions in Asia. From this vantage point you can look across a narrow strip of Afghanistan that historically served as a buffer zone between the Russian and British Empires.
- The road through the corridor passes dramatic landscapes of glaciers, grasslands, and towering mountain ranges — a reminder that we are truly traveling along the roof of the world.
- Then we continue on to the Panlong Mountain Road, often referred to as the “Dragon Road of the Pamirs.” This dramatic mountain highway twists through the landscape with dozens of hairpin turns, snaking through valleys surrounded by snow-capped peaks, grasslands, and deep gorges.
- Driving this road offers stunning panoramic views and is one of the most famous scenic routes in western China. Here, we will shoot drone videos for all to keep as souvenirs.
- Lunch will be enjoyed following the descent from the plateau.
Afternoon
- We will then visit a local Tajik family, where we’ll enjoy traditional music performed by our hosts while sharing snacks together. For the daring, you’re welcome to join in the dancing alongside your fellow travelers.
- Dinner tonight will be served at a local restaurant.
- Overnight in Taxkorgan.
Wednesday, July 15 – Pamir Frontier Return: Taxkorgan to Kashgar
Morning
- Breakfast at the hotel before we begin our journey back toward Kashgar.
- Along the way we will stop at Tahman Wetland, sometimes called the “Golden Ribbon of the Pamirs.” We will stop for lunch as we continue on to Kashgar. Fed by glacial meltwater from the surrounding mountains, the wetlands form a patchwork of grasslands, winding rivers, and reflective pools that attract migratory birds and grazing yaks. With snow-capped peaks rising in the distance, the area offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Tashkurgan region and excellent viewpoints to photograph Muztagh Ata reflected in the water.
- We will have lunch on our way to the Muji Vocano Complex.
Afternoon
- In the afternoon we visit the Muji Volcano Complex, a little-known geological wonder on the Pamir Plateau. Dozens of volcanic craters dot the landscape here, surrounded by wetlands, snow peaks, and glaciers.
- Visitors can walk among the volcanic formations and see the famous “Devil’s Eye” crater, a dramatic circular formation that reveals the immense geological forces that shaped the region.
- Here we will explore the volcanic terrain on foot, with optional horseback riding provided by local herders.
- By evening we arrive back in Kashgar.
- Dinner will be in the city.
- For those who still have energy, we may optionally visit a local live music house, where Kashgar’s younger generation gathers to enjoy live performances in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
- Along the way, we will stop by the Kunlun Eye Ferris Wheel, a giant Ferris wheel standing over 130 meters tall beside Kashgar’s East Lake. As the tallest urban landmark in southern Xinjiang, its panoramic cabins offer sweeping views across the city and surrounding landscapes.
- Overnight in Kashgar.
Thursday, July 16 – Kashgar & Departure
Morning
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Early in the morning we return to Kashgar Ancient City to watch the daily gate-opening ceremony, a theatrical reenactment celebrating the city’s long history as a Silk Road trading hub.
